45 years ago an old kauri boat was found rotting away in the mud at Lake Tarawera and the bach owner loving restored it to its former glory. The bach was sold almost 20 years ago and the boat left the lake to be cared for by the family. They returned recently to celebrate Dad’s 90th birthday and the boat came too. It is now aged 99 and still has the brass plate showing the Tauranga boat builder who constructed it. The family took it out trout fishing and it sat anchored proudly in the bay. I was unaware of it’s history when I captured this shot one evening as the late sun illuminated it against the stormy sky. After hearing about the photo the family contacted me and we had it printed and framed to present to Dad on his birthday. One of those moments that make you feel quietly proud.
