Enlightenment

Enlightenment is education or awareness that brings change.

My final image from Iceland is from the absolutely inspiring Hallgrímskirkja church, Reykjavík’s main landmark. A lot of my images from Iceland were symmetrical and this is a prime example. The light in this church is amazing. I’m not a religious person but I do have great admiration for churches and other such buildings that are created with such grandeur yet simplicity, eliciting an emotional response in the observer.

There’s an old saying that if you always do what you’ve always done then you will always get what you always got. [Henry Ford]

Enlightenment for me is trying to be aware of the thought patterns that hold me back, my attitude of I’ll work more on that someday rather than I’ll do that today and to implement changes slowly but surely. Hopefully these will accumulate over time to get me back to putting creative photography and book creation higher in my to do list than all those routine everyday challenges that all too often suck the better part of the day from me.

  1. This looks to be an extraordinary place, made more so by your photographic treatment.

It is also wonderful that you can anchor your feelings about enlightenment to such a fantastic physical place.

I just hope that you joining aGathering will also be a landmark to enlightenment

    • Thank you. It is a splendid church for sure. There is a phenomenal organ at the opposite end and to sit there and listen to it being played was incredible. On the second occasion there was a male voice choir practising, also inspiring. Yes, I do believe that belonging to aGathering is bringing enlightenment! So far, so good!

  2. Responsibility/Immersed/Enlightened – deep topics with a great combination of comments and images.
Anita, I am coaching a few CPS members and have talked about Personal Perspective as being one leg of the three legged stool of photography. To me your set and comments illustrates that so well. You visit a country which is well known for certain images and you come up with completely different ones. Although each are very different they seem to be very consistent with your view on life.
I like that enlightenment has two aspects – ‘state of understanding something’ and in Eastern terms the higher spiritual state that can be achieved. Both sound good.
The first and last of your images appeal the most, I guess because they are a little more formal.
    Thanks Anita.

    • Thank you for your comments John, greatly appreciated indeed. A great observation about making different images from what we expect, I hadn’t really thought of that but when I look back on the other images I made, there was a lot of different images from what I even expected to have made! The weather was a total challenge, and with challenge comes growth!

  3. Wow, loved this series Anita. Shape, form, texture, tone. Just how these elements can be combined to create such different feelings and responses to an image. Wonderful. Thank you.
