We had met an American tourist on the train to Agra who we met again at the Taj Mahal. The night before he’d been out on a boat on the river for sunset and reoommended it over viewing the Taj at sunset from the park on the other side of the river. We went with his recommendation and had another lovely river cruise. This man, the owner or operator, rowed and had a man standing on the back with a pole. One of his services was picking up locals to cross the river, and with the shallow water and muddy banks he needed the pole to get underway again when we picked up a man for the trip back. The Taj looked lovely in the warm light, but I found it even more magical to see the large numbers of birds wading on the banks – mainly what appeared to be pied stilts and egrets.
