Catherine was a bridesmaid at our wedding and is one of Ailsa’s oldest friends. But we hadn’t seen her and Mitch for years…
We stayed the night with them in Martinborough. Catherine showed us around the area and we visited the boutique vineyard where they grow Pinot Noir grapes for a Hawkes Bay winemaker.
Unfortunately this area was hit by an unseasonal frost event and the new grapes suffered quite badly – basically the vines had to starts all over again. Catherine was clearly disappointed and kept saying things like “Sorry it’s so untidy” or “Normally the grapes look so much better”.
Although the damage was quite obvious, I saw something different. I saw the care and attention that has gone into developing this meticulously set up small vineyard.
So when I got the images onto my computer I had a purpose. I wanted to show some of the magic of the place that, while perhaps not visible, was clear to be seen during our visit.
