Three observations about photography
1. Planning – I know there are only a few days each year when the sun rises over the end of the pier. I had to be in position and framed up when it happened.
2. Persistence – I’ve been trying to take this shot for years. Some years I got the days wrong. Some years it was overcast. I had a successful shot from the day before but the sky was a boring blank blue. All the unsuccessful trips over the years were good practice.
3. Serendipity – The figures sitting down, the gulls, the clouds, the composition needs it to make it less boring. Sometimes they happen, sometimes they don’t. But if you’re not there, alert and ready for it, you won’t capture them. Some shots are all about serendipity – slices of life captured as they zooms past.

I’m not saying it’s a great shot, but I enjoyed getting it and it pleases me.

  1. Thank you for joining us John – I saw this the other day and marvelled at the intensity and vibrance. It’s only on my computer screen that the completeness of the composition makes itself felt – serendipity is a wonderful thing. Planning and persistence are still key. It gave me hope that you’d been trying to make this picture for so long.

  2. Id say that if you enjoyed getting it and it pleases you then that makes it a great shot……… just saying,,,

  3. I think pre-visualizing a photo, making a plan and creating it is very satisfying! And it’s a lovely photo! Also, a good story! 🙂

  4. I think Ian just said it better than I could. Heartwarming image – could look at it for hours…. and I think I will!!
