“If the path be beautiful, let us not ask where it leads.” ~ Anatole France

Ever since I came to Hanmer Springs I have run, walked, biked and enjoyed being in our forest in all seasons and weathers. It’s a wonderful place to escape and lose yourself, to find peace and healing by just being there. I made this image during autumn 2011 when I spent many hours finding solace in the forest away from Christchurch’s continuing tremors. It is in my favourite spot amongst the European larches which were planted in 1904.

Despite the peacefulness here, there are questions – Where does the pathway lead? What mystery lies beyond? We know the real answer but emotionally will we get to that spot and what will we find when we get there? This image tells me to relax and just enjoy the journey.

  1. I love the colours you have captured here, it has a real surreal feel to it. Love it

  2. Barbara, Beautiful. I do feel the peace here – soft lovely colours and strong supporting trunks. Its all warm and comfortable. I love it too.

  3. This image invites me into it – I want to wander amongst the trees, slowly, feeling the warmth that I know rises from the forest floor, smelling the wonderful earthy leafiness, hearing the whispers and soarings of the air as it shuffles through the trunks and branches. And remembering all that I am and grateful for all that is.

  4. You have made many images from.this place and I have enjoyed them all. I’m glad that you keep coming back and that you share such a special place.
The images are seasonal and this one is clearly autumn. By anchoring the image in a season you remind me of my autumn experiences.

  5. Lovely image Barbara and absolutely love the sentiment in the quote. Am going to look even harder for the beauty in my journey.

  6. Thank you all. I really do love this place and the emotions it creates for me. My challenge now is to keep photographing this part of the forest and to try and take my images to a new level – eventually!

  7. I does make you want to walk into it. nice
