During the workshop that this image was taken in there was not a lot of time to think about what you were doing.  Elizabeth Opalenik drove these shooting sessions hard, asking us not to muck around but to really feel our way into what we were seeing and shoot from a space where the head didn't interfere.  The model was continually moving through a series of flowing turns and twists and we used whatever natural light was available.  I found the results amazingly refreshing because I had to take my hand off the controls and be prepared for whatever the subconscious dictated.  This image was one of the results from that session.

  1. She was teaching you to let your heart drive the shot. Don’t take images be taken by them. Nice image.

  2. The concept of the shoot sounds fantastic.

I find this image very creepy. The vacant look on her face and the pose look like a dead body.

  3. Looks to me like she’s waiting under the earth. Like a seed.

  4. I’m with Ian on this one – there’s a lot coming out here and you probably understand it more than us. Or you can see it another way like Tim. Which is it?

    • My first response was “oh, that’s creepy, very scary.” But then I’ve thought about the image a lot since then and decided that I certainly don’t want to be in a place like that so I’m figuring out what part of me needs to be dead and gone and what is the seed that will grow in its place.
