What is the right amount of patriotism?
I experienced 4 July in rural New Hampshire, USA. We saw a parade in a nearby town and many of those there showed pride in their country. I also observe the large number of US flags flying outside homes.
Different cultures express pride in their country in different ways but I got thinking about how we feel about our country. I think most of us stand up for our country when we are overseas and people ask where we are from. But it seems to be in our nature not to show that pride when we are a home. Does that matter?

  1. Its the kiwi way. It’s a shame we can’t be more proud of our country. We have here our own little part of paradise!

  2. You are correct John – it is the kiwi nature. I agree with Ferg – New Zealanders are just too modest and don’t promote themselves or their own place.

  3. I do love American pride! It can be a bit over the top, but generally to be admired none the less.

  4. Nope I disagree. I think flag waving is a terrible way to show people wanting to be separate from other people. A very old fashioned idea that we buy into.
