I called Patti on Tuesday just before lunch and basically said “I'm coming over to talk photography.” I've know Patti for about 3 years now, but just as a friendly acquaintance and one of the handful of other Americans from the photography club.
“Ok, give me 30 minutes.” was her reply.

I had the day off work and I recently sorted out that Patti was back in town and flatting in a place located about a 10 minute walk from my house. I showed up 30 minutes later with my camera in hand but lacked any agenda, but I knew that would not be awkward. Patti is one of those people who can carry on a lovely conversation; this is different than someone who simply talks. She is full of experience, curiosity and energy; she is more than happy to share that with anyone who is willing to listen and contribute. 3 hours flew by in an instant, probably because she reminds me a lot of my mom in the way she thinks and does things (i.e. a lot like me). We quickly moved from Nikons and Macs to Kiwi culture and personal history. It was more than a pleasant exchange, it was an honest exchange.

Despite all the crap on my plate that was weighing me down, I made a new friend on Tuesday. Tuesday was a good day.

  1. Your comments are very special. First, it is the person you have photographed. Second, that you spent time together. Third, how you expressed your feelings.
It reminds me of how important relationships are in life – it takes us out of self-centred preoccupation. Life expands rather than contracting.
Thank you Dave for sharing and Hi Patti, if you read this. My goal for 2012 is to get in touch again with my photographic friends now that the pressures of Re:START are lessening.

  2. Great portrait. I love the books , glass and flower you have included.
